 | Trainees are under direct veterinary supervision, with small group size
ensuring an excellent level of instruction

Course Content
In accordance with Department of Agriculture regulations, the D.I.Y. A.I.
course :
 | Is at least 30 hours spread over 4 to 5 days |
 | The lectures cover a range of topics:
 | Anatomy of the female reproductive tract and organs |
 | Explanation of the oestrus cycle, duration of oestrus, methods of heat
detection and optimum time to inseminate |
 | Description of semen collection, processing and freezing |
 | Important factors in handling, storing and transport of semen |
 | Regulations controlling the practice of A.I. including record keeping |
 | Principles of sanitation and the prevention of spreading disease |

 | Practical sessions are held at an abattoir using live animals. These
sessions include :
 | Rectal examination of the cow and recognition of the reproductive
tract and organs by rectal palpation |
 | Passing an A.I. gun through the cervix into the uterus, with
positioning checked by the Instructor |

Pre-breeding Refresher Courses are provided to allow the already trained
breeder to sharpen their skills and keep up with recent developments in A.I.
All courses are conducted by an experienced cattle veterinary surgeon to
ensure :
 | The highest standard of instruction |
 | The safeguarding of the welfare of the animals used by the trainees |
